Recorded in the spellings of Gipp, Gipes. Gippes, and Gypps, this is an English surname. It is a nickname form of the popular medieval pet name "Gibb", itself a short form of the personal name "Gilbert", introduced into England by the Normans after the Conquest of 1066. The original name was "Gislebert" or "Gillebert", composed of the elements "gisil", meaning "noble youth", and "berht", meaning "bright or famous". Early examples of the name recordings include Edmund Gippe of Suffolk in 1227, and Agnes Gyppes of Colchester, also Essex, in 1352. Robert Gipson is recorded in the Hearth Tax Roll sof Suffolk in 1524 whilst a recording from an early surviving London church register is that of Agnes Gipps who married William Chandler on February 13th 1562, at Harrow on the Hill, Middlesex. The first recording of the surname anywhere in the world, is believed to be that of Walter Gippe of the city of Lincoln, in the year 1188. This was during the reign of King Henry 11nd of England,1154 - 1189. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
