Normanton

Normanton
This interesting name is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is a locational surname deriving from any one of the places called Normanton, which are situated in the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland and Yorkshire. The placenames are almost all recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, as, variously, "Normantune", "Normentune", "Normantun" and "Normantone", and all share the same meaning and derivation, which is the settlement of the Northmen or Norwegians from the Old English pre 7th Century "Northman", Northman or in some cases, the Old Scandinavian "Northmanna", Norwegians, with the Old English "tun", settlement, homestead. The modern surname from the placename Normanton can be found as Nomanton, Norminton, and Normington. The marriage of Isaac Normington and Susanna Robinson was recorded in Heptonstall, Yorkshire, on March 5th 1643. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Henry de Normaneton, which was dated 1273, The Yorkshire Hundred Rolls, during the reign of King Edward 1, "The Hammer of the Scots", 1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
