Stainton
This is a locational name 'of Stainton' from any of the various places, thus called in Cumbria,(the parish of Stanwix and Dacre), Urswick parish in Lancashire, Stainton in Westmoreland or any of the three places called Stainton in the West and North Ridings of Yorkshire. The name derives from the Olde Norse personal name 'Steinn' meaning 'Stone' and the Olde English 'tun' - a farm of settlement, or from residence at a stony place. From 1273 to 1379 the name is recorded as Staynton. the spelling Stainton first appears in 1804, when one Robert Ferenyhough married an Ann Stainton in St.Georges Church, Hanover Square, England. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Herbert de Staynton. which was dated 1273 - The Hundred Rolls of Lincolnshire. during the reign of King Edward I, The Hammer of the Scots, 1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
